LP Percussion

Percussion instruments

Recognising an instrument

Duration: 1 lesson

The following games are used for this exercise: The Museum and the Quiz at the television studio.

The pupils will achieve the following skills:

"They will become acquainted with the instrument family called 'percussions'

"They will learn about the difference of the different percussion instruments based on what they look like, their timbre and name

"They will be able to recognise the individual types of percussion instruments based on what they look like, their timbre and sound

"They will discover that there are different instrument families in a symphony orchestra and their position in the orchestra

The pupils must acquire knowledge of percussion instruments on their own by reading about the different instruments and listening to them at the Museum. All percussion instruments are listed on the instrument tree. Here, you will also find the note explaining the instrument family 'percussions'.

Furthermore, the pupils must read the note about the symphony orchestra in book No. 7 in the brown bookcase.

In the Quiz, they must answer various questions about percussion instruments. All questions deal with percussion instruments.

If the pupils have made too many mistakes in the subgames, they can always return to the museum and read about/listen to everything again.

Launch the activity by writing on the blackboard:

"Log on to www.themusicgame.net. Go to the Museum and hear what the custodian has to say".

Instructions for the pupils

The custodian's speech

"Hello there. Good of you to drop by. I've some exciting news. This morning, when I walked to work, I passed the TMG studio and met Dennis…you know the quiz host. He's a funny man. He told me that they're preparing a quiz about percussion instruments. It's very exciting. Consider this … a musician playing the percussion can play all sorts of instruments. Actually, a musician playing the percussion can play all the instruments belonging to the instrument family called percussions. Very impressive.

Anyway, Dennis said that you're more than welcome at the quiz today. So, when you've studied the percussion instruments and listened to the sound examples, go and earn some money. I must be on my way. Plenty of work to do - as always. Remember to read my note on the notice board. Bye!

The custodian's note

Have a look at the instrument tree and see whether you can find an instrument family called 'percussions'. Also read about all the instruments belonging to the same family and listen to them play. Remember that all instruments belonging to the same family are placed on the same branch on the instrument tree.

Go to the Quiz. I am sure that they have a quiz about the topic you have studied today. So you will have ample opportunities to earn some money.
