LP Expressions 3

Crescendo and diminuendo

Expressions in the music 1

Duration: 1 lesson

The following games are used for this exercise: the Museum, the Clarinet Street Musician, the Quiz.

The pupils will achieve the following skills:

"They will become acquainted with two of the expressions used in music, namely crescendo (growing volume) and diminuendo (softer volume)

"They will be able to distinguish between the two expressions

"They will be able to recognise the two expressions when listening to them

"They will be able to use the proper name of the expressions when discussing music

"They will be able to form an opinion as to how the expressions affect the music

Approach

The pupils must acquire knowledge of the two expressions in music on their own by reading about the expressions crescendo and diminuendo and listening to the examples in book No. 5 at the Museum.

In the Quiz, their knowledge will be tested. All questions deal with crescendo and diminuendo.

Furthermore, they will play the subgame with the clarinet street musician Preben C. and in this way test their knowledge. The street musician will also play other expressions but the pupils do not have to complete this part of the game.

If the pupils have made too many mistakes in the subgames, they can always return to the museum and read about/listen to everything again.

Launch the activity by writing on the blackboard:

"Log on to www.themusicgame.net. Go to the custodian and hear what he has to say."

Tips

Always use the terms describing the different expressions when talking with the pupils: Crescendo (growing volume), diminuendo (softer volume).

Instructions for the pupils

The custodian's speech

"Hello and welcome. On my way to work I met Preben C - you know the street musician playing the clarinet. He's playing behind the museum so I often pass him on my way to work. Anyway, I got the impression that he wanted some company but I'm very pressed for time today to listen to him playing so I would very much appreciate if you could drop by him today.

Before you go see him, please read about the two expressions in music - crescendo and diminuendo. We've a book about the subject here at the museum. It's book No. 5 in the brown bookcase. The expressions are explained in the text boxes 5 and 6.

It's also a good idea to go to the Quiz. It's our lucky day because they've a quiz about crescendo and diminuendo. So, you should have ample opportunities to earn some money there. Before you know it, you will earn more money than me. Ha ha..

I've prepared a note that I've placed on the notice board. Please read it before you start. Well, I must get on with my work."

The custodian's note

Have a look in book No. 5 - in the text boxes 5 and 6 explaining crescendo and diminuendo.

Then go to town and find Preben C who is playing the clarinet. He could do with some company. He can play in different ways and he will give you points and coins if you can answer his questions. Today, you only need to listen for two expressions: crescendo and diminuendo.

It is also a good idea to visit the Quiz. Today, they have some questions about crescendo and diminuendo so you can earn a lot of money.
