Woodwind instruments

Recognising an instrument

Duration: 1 lesson

The following games are used for this exercise: The Museum and the Quiz at the television studio.

The pupils will achieve the following skills:

"They will become acquainted with the instrument family called woodwinds

"They will learn about the difference of the different woodwinds based on what they look like, their timbre and name

"They will be able to recognise the individual types of woodwinds based on what they look like, their timbre and sound

"They will discover that there are different instrument families in a symphony orchestra and their position in the orchestra

Approach

The pupils must acquire knowledge of woodwinds on their own by reading about the different instruments and listening to them at the Museum. All woodwinds are listed on the instrument tree. Here, you will also find the note explaining the instrument family 'woodwinds'.

Furthermore, the pupils must read the note about the symphony orchestra in book No. 7 in the brown bookcase.

In the Quiz, they must answer various questions about woodwinds. All questions deal with woodwinds.

If the pupils have made too many mistakes in the quiz, they can always return to the museum and read about/listen to everything again.

Launch the activity by writing on the blackboard:

"Log on to www.themusicgame.net. Go to the Museum and hear what the custodian has to say".

Instructions for the pupils

The custodian's speech

"Hello there. I'm so happy to see you. I really need your help. I've just been told that the football club will visit us here at the museum later today. They would like to know something about the instrument family which includes the flute because the've a new player on the team and he plays the flute. They've been discussing whether the flute belongs to the instrument family called 'woodwinds' or the instrument family called 'brass instruments', so they called me.

But right now, I'm busy for the next half hour. Could you find out to which instrument family the flute belongs. And remember to read about the other instruments belonging to the same family and listen to them playing. Don't forget that we've placed all the instruments belonging to the same family on the same branch. This will be very helpful. Then drop by the TMG television studio. If you're lucky, they've a quiz about the flute and the other members of the instrument family so you've ample opportunities to earn some money. I have to go. But thanks again for your help. Oh wait - have a look in book No. 7 in the brown bookcase. See you!"

The custodian's note

Read about the flute on the instrument tree and find out to which instrument family the flute belongs. Also read about the other instruments belonging to the same family and listen to them play. Remember, that all the instruments belonging to the same family is placed on the same branch on the instrument tree.

Then go to the Quiz. If you are lucky, they have a quiz about the flute and the instrument family to which it belongs so you will have ample opportunities to earn some money.
